 Los Angeles Archdiocese Statements (COVID-19)

Picture
The current public health pandemic continues to bring about fears and anxiety in the hearts and minds of many people. However, it has also unified us as a people seeking the good for the other. Now more than ever, we must continue to anchor our hearts and minds in the abiding truth of God’s love for us, His sons and daughters. We remain strong in faith knowing that God will be with us always.

As we are all aware, we have adapted the way we live our daily lives, as well as in the way we worship. The decisions made regarding the liturgical life of our parishes continue to be made with prayer, faith, and in observance of policies established by our civil authorities ensuring the good of all people.

Therefore, in order to help priests perform their ministry with faith, prudence, and wise judgment, the Archbishop in consultation with the Auxiliary Bishops and the Council of Priests, has established the following revised liturgical guidelines. These guidelines are to be followed until further notice. Read More...

"We need to approach this emergency with faith and confidence in God and also with prudence."  -Most Reverend José H. Gomez
Mass for the Homebound
Know someone who is sick or homebound? A livestream is available each Sunday from the Cathedral of Our Lady of Angels. Watch live here The English Mass is celebrated at 10:00 AM and the Spanish Mass is celebrated at 12:30 PM.
My friends, we are living in extraordinary times. These are measures we do not desire to make in our spiritual lives – but for the good of our neighbors we make these sacrifices in faith. I’d invite us to pray united with Archbishop Gomez for the thousands of people around our world who have been infected with this virus, and for the numerous healthcare professionals who are striving to stem the spread of this disease. May God help us all during this time of love of our neighbor.

Holy Name of Mary Parish in Response to the Archdiocesan Statement

Sisters and brothers of Holy Name of Mary Parish,
We are experiencing extraordinary events that I’ve never experienced before in my 21 years of ministry! But we are in an extraordinary moment in the life of our country and the world – and as people of faith we are called to remember the truth of God’s love for us and take appropriate precautions for ourselves and our neighbor in the wake of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).

The Archdiocese of Los Angeles announced the suspension of Masses amid the current health threat due to COVID-19 (novel coronavirus).

“I deeply regret that we are forced to temporarily suspend public celebration of the Mass in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles,” said Archbishop José H. Gomez. “What we do in the Church, we do out of love for God and love for our brothers and sisters. We are taking this extraordinary step today out of love and concern for those in our families and communities who are most vulnerable to this deadly coronavirus.” Archbishop Gomez stressed that the decision was “not made lightly,” and that it was made after “much prayer and reflection” and in consultation with the Archdiocese’s auxiliary bishops, Council of Priests, lay advisors, and government and public health officials.
“I ask your continued prayers for all those who are afflicted with this virus and those who are afraid and vulnerable. I also ask you to pray and reach out to help the many families who are facing difficulties as a result of this emergency. We also need to keep in our prayers all the doctors, nurses, caregivers, and public health and civil authorities working to contain the outbreak of this virus and treat those who are sick,” stated the Archbishop.

Catholics are encouraged to continue to pray at home with their families and join to the sacrifice of the Mass by making an act of spiritual communion. They are also encouraged to participate in the Holy Mass via the Internet.

Funerals

Weddings

During this challenging time of the coronavirus pandemic, losing a loved is hard enough, and more difficult at a time of unprecedented upheaval and limitations that may seem overwhelming. If someone you love has died recently, it is likely that the current social distancing orders and travel restrictions are making funeral planning especially difficult for your family. When death affects our social circle, we naturally feel the need to congregate and support one another in person. Even if you must delay a larger public gathering, please know and understand that those who want to support you will still be happy to attend months from now. Don’t assume that there’s a time limit on holding this larger public gathering. Everyone understands that the pandemic is affecting public events. I, along with our priests and deacons, encourage you to hold a small initial service right away and then schedule the additional service down the line.

If you are grieving the loss of a loved one whose funeral or memorial was already celebrated, know that you may be experiencing more intense feelings of grief during these uncertain times. In grief, it is natural to feel a wide range of emotions like sadness, shock, disorganization, and regret. I offer many different grief support options to help you in your journey. I can send you a Daily Grief Mediation email, ways to cope, resources, meditations and prayers and articles to help you connect with the wide range of emotions. Please email me at brenda@hnmparish.org to sign up. I am also a thanatologist and grief minister and am offering over the phone pastoral counseling to you. Please call me at ext. 137 to make an appointment.
Please fill out a Wedding Inquiry on our website to begin the process and I will contact you both to answer questions and discuss the planning for this beautiful sacrament.

Faith Formation

We are sending weekly emails to all Faith Formation program families with child-friendly gospel reflections to continue faith growth at home. We are providing home study sacrament preparation materials for families with children who will celebrate full initiation (RCIA) or First Communion this year. We are updating and expanding our Facebook presence on our HNM Family Faith page.We are anticipating and eagerly preparing for beyond the pandemic...the celebration of sacraments, Vacation Bible School 2020, the call and training of new volunteers, and planning/calendaring/registering/launching of our 2020-21 Faith Formation offerings.
